Holiday Fire Safety

With the Holiday season upon us, we here at SERVPRO Team McGinnis would like to remind everyone of some simple steps you can take to help ensure a SAFE Holiday Season:

  1. Inspect all Electrical Decorations/Lights for damage before using. Cracked or damaged wall plates or sockets, loose or exposed wires, and unsecure connections may cause shock or pose a fire risk.
  2. Do not connect more than 3 strands/strings of lights together. This may cause a blown fuse, and can also start a fire.
  3. Keep live trees well-watered to prevent drying out. Dry wood and needles mixed with electrical decorations pose a greater fire risk.
  4. Do not leave lit candles unattended. These can easily be knocked over by playful pets or kids, or simply forgotten and allowed to burn down and start a fire.
  5. Please be mindful that decorations or stockings you might hang on your fireplace mantel are flammable. Use caution if lighting a fire
  6. Do not leave the stove unattended when cooking. Not only are many holiday house fires started by meal preparation, unattended hot pots and pans on the stovetop pose a burn risk for children
  7. KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER EASILY ACCESSIBLE! Know where the fire extinguisher is located in your home or the home you are visiting. Check them regularly, like your smoke detectors, to make sure it will work if you need it.

We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. But, remember that if you do experience a fire, big or small, your Fire Team is always ready to respond!

Ways to Prevent Mold Damage to Your Home

10/3/2024 (Permalink)

picture of drywall covered in black mold spots Mold growth CAN be prevented if you take the appropriate steps...

Mold is everywhere – indoors, outdoors, and even on the evening news! There is a lot of concern over mold in our environment, and how it can impact us and our families.  Here are the top 10 things the EPA feels everyone should know about mold:

  1. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  2. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  3. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  4. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    1. Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    2. Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    3. Increasing ventilation
    4. Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  5. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  6. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  7. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  8. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  9. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

If you do see, or even suspect mold, in your home, do not hesitate to call your Mold Remediation Specialists at SERVPRO® today at 541-745-2097!

Be prepared for the storm

6/5/2024 (Permalink)

picture of a flooded river after a storm Take precautions BEFORE a storm hits to minimize damage

Storms affect your home more than you may realize. At first glance a storm may look like high winds, just some rain, maybe some snow and sleet. When you look closer, storms and what all they bring, you begin to notice how it may greatly affect your home.

Large trees

Trees near your home can get weakened by storms causing branches to bend and possibly break causing damage to your home or roof. Now is a good time to get your trees trimmed and looked at.

Heavy Rain

Rain is pretty common in the Northwest, but if there is a leak in your roof or windows the heavy rains will find their way in through these spots and cause water damage to the interior of your home. Get these spots taken care of before heavy rains.

Chimney Maintenance

Your chimney can become packed with debris during a storm causing a blockage, this is also a place for animals to build their nest creating a bigger problem. Get your chimney cleaned out in preparation for the stormy season.

Flooding

High winds mixed with rainfall can bring down small branches and leaves, as well as garbage, to fill your gutters and clog the storm drains on your street. This causes the continuously falling water to back up and rise. In your gutters, this can feed water back into any access/opening into your roof to cause flooding from the ceiling, Debris with heavy rains can also cause water to pool up against your home’s foundation, and feed back into your basement or crawl space.  Debris blocking a storm drain can cause the street and sidewalk to overflow, and risk damaging your home or property.  It is important to pay attention on dryer days and clear any debris that may have gathered during previous windy or rainy days.

Paying attention to your environment/surrounding BEFORE the storm hits, can help prevent a major loss to you and your family.  But if disaster strikes, do not hesitate to call your Water Remediation Specialists at SERVPRO Team McGinnis today at 541-745-2097.

Forget to turn off the sink?

6/5/2024 (Permalink)

Have you left the sink running in your bathroom or thought you did? Do you know what unfortunate damage water causes to your home?

In Dallas, Oregon a family of four prepared for a restful night. Once everything was said and done, lights out and quiet fell over the house, no one realized the bathroom sink was left on. Morning came and routines began, but unfortunately the family was struck by a wet surprise. Their bathroom floor had standing water, and the carpet leading down the hallway was soggy, as well. In a panic the couple grabbed towels and a mop to soak up as much water as possible. Feeling defeated and lost, the couple decided to call SERVPRO Team McGinnis.

The phone call came in at 6:44am and we sent a team out immediately to inspect the damage. After assessing the damage, our team lead informed the homeowners that the water had gone into the drywall of the first floor. Water has the ability to seep into areas where it is not noticed by the naked eye.

After explaining the damage and locations, our team brought the equipment in to start the drying process. Our teams are highly trained in various drying techniques and chose the less damaging method. Rather than removing all the carpet to dry the water between the subfloor and carpet our team used a special drying method which floats the carpet allowing air to move under. Drying equipment is set in place and a thorough drying is started.

SERVPRO Team McGinnis takes into consideration the customer’s needs and concerns. With that, we create a plan that offers a timely process and professional services.

If you find yourself with possible water damage or have questions concerning water contact SERVPRO® today at 541-745-2097. Day or night, we have teams readily available to help with your disaster emergency!

5/10/2024 (Permalink)

a kitchen after a stove fire -blackened soot on walls and surfaces While it might not look like too big of a job, even a small fire can require professional trained technicians to help!

Cleaning up soot and smoke after a grease fire in your kitchen can be a daunting task.

A grease fire in your home is an unexpected disaster and can create a significant amount of damage. Pouring water onto a fire is an initial reaction, but water mixed with oil creates a splash effect, which actually can cause the fire to spread. The most effective way to snuff out a grease fire is with a fire extinguisher, baking soda, or a fire-suppression blanket.

After extinguishing the fire in your home, it is difficult to clean and restore your kitchen to its original condition. In addition to visible soot, the smoky smells permeate every porous surface and can remain for years, if not properly cleaned. We want you to look to us, SERVPRO® Team McGinnis as your neighborhood fast and friendly team to help turn things around.

Our team here at SERVPRO® will walk you through the whole restoration process making sure you understand and are comfortable leaving your kitchen in our hands. Communication is key with every job, especially yours. A fire in your home....

Fire Damaged Dryer in a Garage Even small fires need professionals to make it like it never even happened!

A fire in your home….

An Oregon homeowner recently suffered fire and smoke damage in their garage. Investigation discovered that an electrical malfunction started the dryer fire. The placement of a fire extinguisher nearby allowed the homeowner to react quickly and get the fire subdued with relative speed. However, even in that short amount of time, the area of the garage surrounding the dryer became covered in soot and smoke residue.

Fire damage leaves behind odors, smoke residue and soot which can be challenging for the homeowner to clean. The heat from the fire itself causes porous surfaces, such as drywall, to open up and trap odors. And while soot might just look like dirt, breathing in soot particles can be harmful to your health. Soot contains a mixture of fine particles, such as carbon, chemicals, and other byproducts of incomplete combustion. When inhaled, these particles can irritate the respiratory system, leading to coughing, shortness of breath, and respiratory distress. And the PH of soot is such that is slowly eats away at the materials it clings to, such as ceramics, metals, glass, etc.  By calling SERVPRO® the homeowner was at ease knowing the cleanup was being professionally managed, and the soot and odor were safely and thoroughly removed.

When you are faced with a fire disaster, remember SERVPRO® is here for you. We are have technicians that operate 24/7. Call SERVPRO® Team McGinnis today at 541-745-2097.

We can make it “Like it never even happened."
