Individual Cleaning Standards: What is Clean?
10/4/2022 (Permalink)
I think it’s important to note that everyone has different standards of clean. I met a man once who said he kept his home meticulously clean…and he was half right. His home was very clean, in the sense that it was clean of disorganization and clutter. But there was dust covering all horizontal surfaces within the home. So is clean “organization”? Or is clean “free from contamination & dust?” The answer is the later. If a space is well organized, it can still be filthy. But a “messy” house, with toys, books, clothes, and clutter everywhere…can be completely clean!
So how clean is your home? Most spaces appear clean until more detailed inspections take place. SERVPRO keeps our standard of clean as “Sparkling, dust free, sanitary, organized” organization matters when it comes to keeping a clean home. It’s also easier to maintain a clean home if it isn’t constantly covered with clutter. But it is interesting to note, that a space can appear messy as can be, but be completely clean.
Regular and proper cleaning is good for indoor air quality and health. Keeping the dust at bay is good for people with lung conditions such as mesothelioma and asthma. Airing out your home is very important, especially if you have no central air. Moving stale air out of a space, and inviting fresh air into the space, can give your house a crisp and fresh feel.
As spring is coming to an end, many of us are feeling the push to finish (or start) our spring cleaning list. So here are some tips on keeping your house clean, organized, and full of fresh air!).
-Make the beds daily (and keep bedding laundered weekly)
-Do laundry as it accumulates, don’t save all the laundry for one day of the week
-prioritize chores and tasks (dishes are more important right now than organizing the bookshelf)
-Be happy with 80% clean, if you get your home to 80/20 you are doing a pretty good job! Try not to obsess over the details and look at it as a 100% or nothing scenario.
-Declutter! Haven’t used it in the last 12 months and aren’t planning on using it in the next 12? Donate or throw out or sell that stuff!
-vacuum every day (or every other day if carpet is not a heavily trafficked area).
-sort and recycle paper ASAP! (Mail, magazines, bills, etc)
-Use doormats!
-Keep a cleaning schedule (Tuesday bathrooms get deep cleaned, Wednesday is dusting, etc)
-Try to wash dishes right after meals, and keep counters clean by the end of the day!
-Do a 15minute pick-up/organize routine at the end of each day!
-Air out your house often when the weather is clear and air quality outside is good.
Happy Cleaning!!

Leave the Deep Cleaning to the Professionals!
How we go about Deep Pathogen Cleaning here at SERVPRO!
The deep-cleaning sanitization process helps to proactively stop the spread of viral pathogens and bacteria, giving customers and employees the peace of mind to spend time together in these shared spaces. Our deep-clean process all begins with an initial cleaning of all porous and non-porous surfaces. This first sweep uses our proprietary cleaning products, such as SERVPROXIDE, to remove germs and dirt from high-touch surfaces like counters, desktops and door handles. Even soft surfaces like furniture and carpeting are cleaned and sanitized.
After everything has been thoroughly cleaned, next comes disinfection. This is when we focus on actively disinfecting viral and bacterial contaminants on objects and surfaces by using cleaning products like SERVPROXIDE or Benefect Decon-30. The application of surface disinfectants is varied, and it can range from our products being applied with a saturated towel, or sprayed with an Ultra Low Volume fogger or ULV mister method. By combining these techniques, we’re able to disinfect all high touch surfaces and surrounding surfaces, from keyboards to light switches, and floors to furniture. When it comes to deep-clean sanitization, nothing is overlooked.

Labor Day Weekend 2020, a weekend we will never forget here in Oregon. Many set out to enjoy a three day weekend of warm weather, family, friends and BBQ’s. The weather was predicating a warm spell and high winds. As everyone was excited to enjoy the holiday, they never expected a fire storm. People turned on their HVAC Systems and were in search of air filters & purifiers to keep the interior of their homes air quality at a breathable level. This helped with breathing conditions however brought the ash and soot into the ventilation systems. Many of the homes in the wild fire areas sat at a Level 2 & 3 evacuation alert for over a month as the fires burned. To those that did not lose their homes, they suffered massive Fire & Smoke Damage. SERVPRO is not only known for their Fire and Water restoration, but we do plenty of cleanup jobs in our community.
Mostly, we do home cleanup, or business cleanup, but every once in a while, we get the opportunity to clean vehicles.
Recently, we had the honor of cleaning out a police cruiser for one of the local police departments in our area, it was pretty fun seeing it in our warehouse getting cleaned.
People will need car cleaning in the event there is a biohazard, like blood from an accident or someone gets car sick, excessive amounts of dirt, or smoke damage from smoking in the vehicle. We also do mold remediation on cars. We’re here to help when the job needs to be done!
SERVPRO of Benton County has all the equipment necessary to clean pretty much anything; including cars!

Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning can help keep your home healthier
As the weather warms up, we want to open the windows and, metaphorically, emerge from our winter hibernation. It is typically the time of year where homeowners take a few weekends to spruce up the interior and exterior of their homes – wash away the winter drab. Keeping your home clean and tidy is important for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, a clean home is less likely to face issues like mold damage, pest infestation and other problems that stem from a lack of attention and care. From the kitchen to the garage and from the backyard to the bedrooms, Spring Cleaning is very important in the maintenance of Willamette Valley homes.
If you are looking to spruce up your home this spring season, keep in mind the following cleaning tips:
- Clean out your refrigerator – dispose of expired items and wash each tray
- Give all of your doormats a good wash
- Clean your upholstery and carpet – get professional help from SERVPRO to make sure the job is done right
- Pay special attention to washing your baseboards
- Dust all ceiling fans
- Scrub down your stove and oven
- Sanitize all sinks
- Disinfect your kitchen sink’s disposal
- Thoroughly clean all bathrooms – including shower doors, shower walls, and drain areas
- Disinfect and clean all toilets
- Reorganize your bedroom closets and drawers
- Move boxes or storage bins to check for insect/pest nests behind them
- Pressure wash your driveway and roof
- Wash all windows – light actually helps keep mold growth at bay!!
While there are certainly additional tasks to accomplish while doing your spring cleaning, the above list should serve as a great starting point for you and your family. While spring cleaning is important, keeping your home clean throughout the year is the key to ensuring major dirt buildup is avoided. Mold damage is one of the most common side effects of untreated water leaks and other home issues. If you think your home could use some professional attention, contact our SERVPRO team at your earliest convenience.
